The Battle Rules
1. Step: The Attacker
To attack a country, you need to get there first! Every country you pass through on your way, you must post in (The Sea counts as a single country in this instance) to give the rulers of these countries time to deny you access and/or, if necessary, engage you in combat. You must also post at least once in the land of whoever you are attacking, to give them a chance to attack you before you start a siege. In real life most battles took place in the country and were not sieges. If you are attacked in one of these posts, an admin will move the thread to the "Battlefield" board for you. You may not post two of these threads in the same day, neither may you post two within twelve hours of each other (these are approximate and thirty seconds difference won't matter, but thirty minutes will).
If you are not attacked, you need to make a thread in the Battle Area, either in the board "Battlefield" or "The Sea", depending if you are fighting on Land or on Water. Inform the ruler of the country or city you are attacking so that he/she will be aware of the attack, although they probably will have noticed that you are marching through their land.
In this thread, you must write following information:
Who, which country is under attack?
Where do you attack, be precise about the landscape and all surroundings.
Write with how many troops you are attacking, about their armory, and if any beast are fighting on your side.
Describe your tactics, formations, range and speed, any information that is necessary to describe how you plan to take down the land, the city, or whatever you are attacking.
For attacking a city or fortress, you need the fitting equipment to take it over (ladders, siege towers, battering ram).
2. Step: The Defender
In the first post, the Defender needs to write following informations:
Are you aware of the attack and had time to prepare? Be honest!
How did you prepare?
Write precisely about the defenses of your city or country.
Write, how many legions you will command against the attacker, describe their armory, number, formation, speed and range. Do you have any creatures fighting for you?
Write about the tactics with which you plan to fight off the attacker.
3. Step: The Allies
If you have asked for help, whether you are the attacker or the defender, those allies need some time to arrive the battlefield. Because of this, they also have to post in every country they pass through and may not arrive before the fifth post of the battle.
Whenever you arrive and first post in the battle thread, your post has to include following information:
Write, for which side you will be fighting so that there won't be any misunderstandings.
How many troops will help in this war, write about their formation, armory, number, speed and range. Will you bring any other creatures to war?
Write about the tactics you planned for this war.
4. Step: During Battle
Your character should have strengths and weaknesses. When you go into a battle or a combat, you should appreciate that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. If you do not want to fight, you can chose to run away or inform them politely in the OOC mode.
Be specific in battle about the placements of your army and what kind of units your army consist of. If you say that you bring 1000 Infantry and 500 Cavalry, you cannot then decide that it would be better for you to have 500 Infantry convert into Cavalry. Keep it realistic, for starters Infantry would not have the training or skills capable to be used as an efficient cavalry unit, and where did the horses come from?! Be Fair!
Constantly describe what your army is doing, where units are placed, an ambush being set, certain units marching to certain places etc. If your ambush came out of nowhere, it is considered godmoding. And if an ambush is discovered in a very irrelevant way and doesn't make sense, it will be considered as metagaming. There will be more about this later on.
5. Step: Winnings and Losses on both sides
Write your own losses and damage in each post, be precise and honest! If the Main Gate of a city is attacked, it won't hold forever if you haven't strengthened it and made it unreachable.
Write details about the forces that break through and hit the target, be realistic!
Keep writing as many details as possible, about losses, defending, damages, tactics.
Give the other side the opportunity to answer! You can't break through all lines and forces in only one post.
More Rules
To enter the defending fortress you have to describe the ways in which you are attempting to breach the defenses, and wait for the defender to reply as to what his retaliation is.
You are not allowed to make an assumption that after one hit your battering ram breaks the gate. Let the defender reply, they may decide to reinforce the gate or throw tar over the top etc. Keep battles realistic and fair!
When you have taken the capital you have won over the land but the people in it may still be rebels and so need to be handled with.
If you need aid in battle send a message to the place you want to call for aid. The land who is aiding you has to wait at least one day role-playing time (i.e. in the related post it must have turned from dawn to dusk).
Auto-Hits
This is something essential. Auto-Hits are frowned upon in many professional role play community. If you write Auto-Hits, you will receive a warning of the staff team. Here is an Auto-Hit example:
* Player 1 swings his sword and cuts off Player 2’s hand.
Why is this bad? There wouldn’t be much of a game if everyone assumed they had complete control over other characters. What is the correct method of attack?
* Player 1 swings his sword toward Player 2’s hand, intending to cutting it off.
Using word’s “intent, attempts, tries, etc” are all good ways to avoid an auto hit. It is now the choice of Player 2, in her defensive send, to determine if she loses her hand, gets cut, blocks the attack or dodges it, or perhaps something else?
For every battle: if you are killing a couple of enemies it is acceptable but if two armies are fighting each other: Do not control others' troops or judge how many of them will be killed. It is very unfair.
Mategaming
This might be unfamiliar to some of you. But mategaming is frowned upon in many role-playing communities. Mategaming is a form of cheating or gaining information unfairly. I doubt anyone would like to role play like this. The game becomes dull and boring as none of the plan worked out. As I mentioned before, everyone should appreciate that when they come into a battle they have chances of winning and losing. Everyone should whole-heartedly play their character.
Godmoding and Powerplaying Simple enough, yet many could not abide the rules.
1. Saying what happened to other characters things (Auto-Hits in one way or another). Eg: The Germans charged forward, killing many Turks. Why is it unfair? It is up to the person to control his own numbers in free form of Role-Playing. And again, everyone should appreciate losing and winning.
2. Refusing to take any losses or few losses. When RPing, everything should be fair, there should not be:
*Player1 The English send a volley of arrows down on the French.
*Player2 The French received few casualties.
This might lead to OOC arguments which will disrupt the flow of the entire RPG.
3. Having übertech armies that are too large, etc.
4. Having your city's geography extremely to your advantage. Player: My city is surrounded by the dark forests, none could come in.
Death
Characters can't be kill unless he/she accept it. If you want to kill, just create a NPC and kill it instead. Resurrections are frowned upon, once a character dies, it should not come back.
