This is not really a game. It is a chance to widen our vocabulary. (Yeah, I know, I know. I sound like a teacher.. blah blah blah )
What takes place here is that someone posts a word, and self explanatory that word is the word for the day. Then another person comes along the next day and posts another.
Anyways, apart from it being an instrument to widen your vocabulary you also have to explain why it is the word of the day (according to you) and what it means (as in a dictionary term). Then, the word you use is to be used in a post that you post that day, in a sentence and not randomly .
However it doesn’t have to be a sensible word. It can be random and funny… there are no strict rules to this… but it would be nice for everyone to contribute a word.
If you don’t post, or you don’t use the word it doesn’t matter. It just helps you understand the word a little more, and when you have used it in a sentence you have mastered it. I don’t know who said but something about the power of words being the greatest knowledge. I don’t know, some philosopher.
Word: Mateship
Meaning: Australia friendship between men: friendship, especially between two men or within a group of men, on terms of equality and mutual support (informal)
Why is it word of the day (according to me):
Well seeing as yesterday was ANZAC day, I don’t see why I shouldn’t have used this word. It is constantly associated with Australia because of all the wars we have been in, and the consistency of never leaving a mate behind. Australian’s value our mates with the highest respect as we always have.
However, it shouldn’t just be recognised as an Australian word. Being Australian, I value it greatly but I also realise that it was not just us who always demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate mateship, but everyone else. This is because we all value our neighbours, our friends and a lot of the time the people around us who contribute to making us, well us.
I thought this word would be a good Word of the day, because a lot of us depend on friends and we don’t truly realise that until we have lost it.
But mateship doesn’t just mean being their for your friends, it is about being there for everyone else too. A lot of the time, during tragic events not only one person is effected, but many. Only through being there for all those who have lost or are in a period of trouble, can we truly exercise and live up to being titled with such a respectable word as “Mateship”.
